Modesto PD investigate officer-involved shooting

MODESTO, CA - Modesto police officers were called to a home on the 1000 block of Gemini Court Tuesday morning in response to a reported stabbing.

Officers arrived at the scene around 1:35 a.m. and found a 17-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to the arm, said Lieutenant Rick Armendariz.

The suspected stabber was found sitting in the driver's seat of a Chevy Tahoe parked on Gemini Ct. Suddenly, the individual sped toward a home, hitting a tree before crashing into the front door and injuring a woman standing in the area, said Armendariz.

Witnesses on scene said officers confronted the driver, ordering them repeatedly to stop. The individual refused to comply and attempted to flee from the home in reverse, at which time two officers shot the person, Armendariz said.

Following the shooting, medical attention was administered, but the suspected stabber was eventually pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, said Armendariz.

The stabbing victim and woman injured during the event were bothy transported to a local hospital, where each was listed in stable condition.

According to Armendariz, three independent investigations were launched into the incident per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in Stanislaus County. The Modesto Police Department will be conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, Stanislaus County District Attorney's office will be conducting an independent criminal review of the incident, and the officers' actions, and the Modesto Police Department's an Internal Affairs Unit will be conducting an administrative investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The two involved officers were placed on administrative leave, which is also standard procedure. Neither was injured during the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident was encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tipsters can also text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a text message to 274637. Just type "TIP704" along with your message.
