Police: 'Red Bull Bandit' arrested

MODESTO, CA - A man suspected of ripping off Fresno stores of Red Bull energy drinks was caught in a similar theft in Modesto, say police.

Burkhalter, 42, of Kingsburg in Fresno County, was nabbed with the aid of a suspicious employee at the Budget Meats store, 1125 Maze Boulevard in Modesto Thursday afternoon, said Modesto police Lt. Rick Armendariz.

The employee said a man portraying himself as a Red Bull drink supplier came into the store with an empty dolly and binder and told the clerk he was there pull the energy drink from shelves and replenish the store with fresh product.

The man took out the Red Bull and left without bring in new drinks, according to the employee. The employee called police and followed the man, obtaining a vehicle description.

Modesto man arrested in teen's death

MODESTO, CA - Police arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing a teen outside Boomers Car Audio Monday evening.

Saul Hernandez, 33, was arrested after Stanislaus County deputies and Ceres police officers gathered information from witnesses, Sgt. Antony Bejaran said.

The victim, Alberto Beraza, 16, was found laying on the ground outside 1511 Crowslanding Rd., Bejaran said.

Police are still investigating what lead up to the shooting.

Bejaran said Hernandez was booked into Stanislaus County Jail for homicide.

Ceres vandals placing concrete blocks on roads

CERES, CA - Police officers in Ceres have warned drivers to use extreme caution at night, after about 10 motorists hit concrete blocks deliberately place in the road over the past four months.

The latest occurrence was Friday night when a motorist hit a piece of concrete in the middle lane of Mitchell Road around 10 p.m.

According to Sgt. Jose Berber, the vandals in each case used large pieces of concrete, similar to concrete piers, that appeared to have been dug up from construction sites. Berber said all the incidents have occurred between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

In one accident, police discovered the piece of concrete used had been painted black to conceal it in the night, and another was placed in a black trash bag, said Berber.

Convicted killer on the lam 36 years caught in Salida

SALIDA, CA - A convicted murderer who avoided capture after escaping from an El Dorado County inmate work crew 36 years ago has been found and caught in Salida in Stanislaus County, the FBI says.

William Walter Asher III, 66, was arrested last Friday at his home where he went under by the name Garry Donald Webb. Asher was convicted along with three others of a 1966 robbery of a San Francisco bar in which the bartender was shot and beaten to death. Asher, then 20, fled to Chicago where he was apprehended and brought back to California to be tried for murder. After being found guilty, Asher was sentenced to life in prison.

In January, 1975, with the help of a female accomplice, Asher escaped from the Growlersburg Conservation Camp #33 in El Dorado County operated by the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Person found shot to death on Modesto street

MODESTO, CA - Stanislaus County sheriff's detectives have little information about a deadly shooting that took place around 5:20 Monday evening.

Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said that was when dispatchers received an anonymous call about a shooting outside a Boomers Car Audio store on the 1500 block of Crows Landing Road in the southern part of town.

UPDATED STORY: Modesto man arrested in teen's death

Deputies arrive to find one person, a male, deceased. It was unknown how many times the victim had been shot.

Investigators did not know if the victim was killed in a driveby shooting, robbery or other type of confrontation.

 

Modesto police: Teenage carjacking, kidnapping suspect caught

MODESTO, CA - Modesto police have a 17 year old in custody after he allegedly hit a woman during a carjacking attempt and then carjacked another car with a 13 year old girl inside before crashing the vehicle.

The girl was not hurt and was reunited with her mother.

The crime spree began about 3:45 p.m. when witnesses called police to report a young man was hitting a woman on the head at the USA Gas station on Oakdale Road near Floyd Avenue. Sgt. Rick Applegate said the attacker then fled to a nearby Save Mart shopping center where he forced his way into a vehicle where the 13 year old was waiting for her mother to return from shopping.

The carjacker drove off with the girl inside and crashed into another vehicle at Oakdale Road and Sylvan Avenue intersection. Applegate said.

The carjacker jumped out and ran into a nearby neighborhood where witnesses collared him and held him until police officers caught up.

Names released in deadly Modesto domestic dispute

MODESTO, CA - A woman was shot and killed during a fight with her husband Sunday afternoon.

The victim's daughter called 911 around 4:45 p.m. to report the fight and get help, Modesto police Lt. Ron Cloward said.

Witnesses heard a shot as police headed to a home on the 3300 block of Creek Bed Court in northeast Modesto. A firefighter, who lived in the area, detained the husband, later identified as 53-year-old Mitchell Joseph Acevedo, until police arrived on scene, Cloward said.

When officers arrived on scene they found Acevedo's wife, 60-year-old Sharon Lorraine Acevedo, with at least one gunshot wound.

Mitchell Acevedo was immediately arrested. His wife later died at the hospital, Cloward said.
