Police: Machete-wielding Ceres man shot by officers

CERES, Calif. - Ceres officers were forced to shoot a man Monday night after he charged them with a machete knife, according to police.

Sergeant Jose Berger of the Ceres Police Dept. said officers were dispatched to a home on the 2400 block of Pineridge Rd. after the parents of a 34-year-old man informed police he was behaving "strangely."

Officers arrived at the home around 7:35 p.m. and began interacting with the man. At some point during the interaction, the man became aggressive, picked up a machete and charged officers, said Berger.

The two officers attempted to subdue the man with bean bag rounds but the man continued to advance, so they fired their guns, Berger said.

CERES, CA - A Ceres man was arrested Friday on suspicion of having more than 100,000 images of child pornography in his possession.

The FBI and detectives with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department took 52-year-old George Pires into custody following an investigation that began with a 911 call from his East Service Road last October, said sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Bejaran.

Report: Deputy ignored warnings before eviction shooting

MODESTO, CA - Several warnings that went ignored, communication problems and departmental failures may have contributed to the deaths of a Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy and locksmith serving an eviction notice last April.

The new information was released in a critical incident review on Friday night by the sheriff's office.

Suspect James Ferrario, 32, gunned down Deputy Robert Paris and Locksmith Glendon Engert during Ferrario's eviction. Ferrario later shot himself and set the building on fire.

The independent report said "the deputies and sergeant did not effectively react to the verbal and written warnings."

A day before the eviction, Paris was warned of possible guns and bombs. The clerk added "be very cautious" and Paris replied "whatever."

The warnings were repeated in an eviction schedule given to Paris.

Modesto shoppers followed by armed driver

MODESTO, CA - Police in Modesto are hoping to find the driver of a Corvette who followed, attempted to block and even waved a gun at two female shoppers.

The two incidents happened at the Plaza Parkway shopping center, just off Highway 99. Police said the first potential victim was approached by the man who attempted to open her car door. The second woman was told to get into the man's car, and he was seen waving a gun.

"There's people in that lot (shoppers). This is very brazen," Modesto Police Department Sgt. Evan Valencia said. "The incident where he shows the firearm really raises our concern."

Valencia described the suspect as a Hispanic man in his 20s or 30s, muscular and with a crew cut. The silver Corvette is thought to be a late 90s model.

Video shot by cameras on top of the Walmart store caught images of the car, but the pictures were too grainy to get a license plate.
