Modesto man convicted of stealing car, burglary

Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit Fladager announced Tuesday that Alex Julian Rodriguez, age 19, of Modesto, was convicted on April 21, 2011 of auto theft, residential burglary, and resisting arrest. Rodriguez had previously been convicted of auto theft and assault from March 2009 for which he was on probation.

On March 27, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m. in the area of Granger Avenue and Stetson Avenue in Modesto, an officer observed Rodriguez speeding in a 1976 white Plymouth Scamp. When the officer tried to perform a routine traffic stop, Rodriguez accelerated away. After several blocks, Rodriguez lost control of the car and crashed in the area of College Avenue.

Rodriguez then jumped out of the car and ran. The officer used his K-9 to track down Rodriguez who was found hiding under a truck in an alley carport on Carver Road and arrested him. The officer returned to the car that Rodriguez had been driving and noticed that the ignition was damaged.

Modesto police search for bank robber

MODESTO, CA - Modesto police search for a bank robbery suspect after the Bank of America on Oakdale Road was robbed Monday around 3:30 p.m.

The robber threatened an employee with a gun, then took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene, said Sgt. Rick Applegate.

The robber is described as a black man in his early 20's with a goatee or unshaven facial hair, about 5'6" tall with a thin build.

The suspect was wearing jeans, a long sleeved shirt and a dark colored knit hat.

Applegate said its unknown if the suspect fled on foot or in a car.

No one was injured during the incident.

Modesto PD asks: have you seen this bank robber?

MODESTO, CA - The Modesto Police Department is asking for the public's help identifying a bank robber.

The department Monday released a surveillance photo of the man who detectives said robbed a Modesto Bank of America branch.

Officers said the man walked into the branch on Oakdale Street around 3:30 p.m. and showed tellers what appeared to be a gun concealed beneath his jacket.

The department will not say how much money he got away with, but they ask anyone with information to call the department.

Modesto DUI patrol officers to deploy this weekend

MODESTO - Officers from the Modesto Police Department’s DUI Enforcement Team will be deploying this weekend to stop and arrest impaired drivers in the department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign.

"For those who don’t care about their own safety or the safety of others, beware - We’re looking for you," said Sgt. Brian Findlen of Modesto PD’s Traffic Unit. "If we catch you behind the wheel of your car, truck or ride your motorcycle buzzed, you will go to jail this weekend."

Modesto PD will be conducting another "Zero Tolerance" DUI Saturation Patrol on Friday, April 29, targeting those who still don’t heed the message to designate a sober driver before their celebrations begin.

5 arrested for Modesto double shooting

MODESTO, CA - Modesto police arrested five people Tuesday connected to a double shooting that happened in March.

On Sunday, March 27 th two victims were found in a car parked at Grace Davis High School around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Tully Road and West Rumble Avenue, but investigators believe the victims were actually shot in the 2600 block of Chester Drive, said Sgt. Rick Armendariz.

The five Modesto residents were arrested after the Modesto Police Department's Homicide Unit, the Department's Street Gang Unit, Modesto Narcotics Enforcement Team, and Crime Reduction Team served search warrants at five different residences.

Police arrested: Daniel Navarrette, 35, Vincent Fernando, 18, Aaron Correia, 25, Shawn Correia, 27, and a 17-year-old juvenile.

Modesto police investigate 5th homicide of 2011; Suspect still at large

MODESTO - Police were investigating the fifth homicide of the year. The latest victim, identified as 53-year-old Jesse Guzman, appears to have been an innocent target of a robbery gone bad. On Thursday, April 14, he died from injuries sustained in a brutal assault that took place on April 11 in southwest Modesto.

Modesto Police Sgt. Rick Armendariz said on Tuesday, April 12, around 12:11 a.m., an officer on patrol spotted Guzman lying near the sidewalk in the area of 4th and I Streets. Guzman was unconscious and non-responsive, suffering from head trauma.

Guzman was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. On April 14, Guzman succumbed to his injuries, and the investigation was classified as a homicide, according to Armendariz.

Investigators learned Guzman was last seen by his family on Monday, April 11 around 11 p.m., but were still trying to piece together exactly what lead up to the assault.
