Riverbank family salutes third living 'Medal of Honor' recipient

WASHINGTON - Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer became only the third living recipient of the Medal of Honor in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan during a ceremony at the White House.

Meyer received the award for saving the lives of 36 Marines and Army soldiers and Afghan allies during a firefight in Kunar province on Sept. 8, 2009.

Meyer also braved enemy fire to retrieve the bodies of four teammates, including US Navy Corpsman James Layton of Riverbank and Escalon.

Layton's family and friends honored the Medal of Honor recipient with a graveside service at Escalon's Burwood Cemetery at the same time President Obama was presenting the award in Washington.

"He went in there and brought my son home," said Nikki Freitas, Layton's mother.  "He gave me the opportunity to say goodbye."
