Funstrummers at the Modesto Library

The Funstrummers Ukulele Band of Modesto will be performing songs that celebrate the beginning of spring at the Modesto Library on Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m. Children ages 8 to 10 will also have the opportunity to learn a few notes on the Ukulele after the performance.  This free musical event is sure to be fun for the whole family.

Cover to Cover Reading Program at the Stanislaus County Library

Children between the ages of 4 and 12 can participate in In-N-Out Burger’s reading promotion program between March 2 and April 13. Children can participate by signing up at any Stanislaus County Library branch and keeping a list of books read on a reading log. Once children have read five books at their reading level they will receive a certificate for a free hamburger or cheeseburger. Participants will be limited to three certificates while supplies last.

Modesto Symphony presents Viva Italia with vocal group Poperazzi

WHAT: The Modesto Symphony Orchestra (MSO) presents “Viva Italia!” lead by guest conductor James Lowe and featuring the vocal group Poperazzi performing Italian classics, thrilling arias, Neapolitan songs and more on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 8pm at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto, CA.  The evening’s program takes you on a tour of sunny Italy and includes tributes to Mario Lanza, Pavarotti, Sinatra and Frankie Valli plus music from The Godfather and more. Viva Italia is the second of three concerts in the Modesto Symphony’s Hilmar Cheese Company Pops Series.

“Viva Italia” was co-produced by Michael Krajewski former Music Director of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra (1989-2000) and current Principal Pops Conductor of the Houston and Atlanta Symphony Orchestras, and newly appointed Music Director of the Philly Pops.

Mineral and Fossil Show at the Modesto Library

Join the Modesto Library Children’s Department for the Mineral and Fossil Show on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 12 p.m. During this program, children will have the opportunity to learn about various rocks, minerals, and fossils and have their geology questions answered after the show during the question and answer session. This program is designed for school-aged children, but all ages are welcome. Free tickets will be available in the Children’s Department one hour before the show.

Mo Willems Week at the Modesto Library

The Modesto Library Children’s Department will be celebrating the award winning children’s author Mo Willems from Monday, Feb. 4 through Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. “Mo Week” will include special StoryTimes with two storytellers and activities featuring his most popular characters Gerald & Piggie, Knuffle Bunny, and (of course) Pigeon. Be sure to bring your camera because participants can also have their picture taken inside of a giant book! Participants can also play Find the Pigeon to win a prize! Tax Talk at the Modesto Library

A representative from H&R Block will be speaking about taxes at the Modesto Library on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. This free talk will highlight new tax law changes, of which all taxpayers should be aware. The topics of dependents and Earned Income Tax Credits will also be discussed. This tax talk will help taxpayers increase their understanding of tax issues through discussion, explanation, and interactive questioning of tax topics. For more information, call the Modesto Library Reference Department at 558-7814.

15th Annual “Sacramento Museum Day” Scheduled for Saturday, February 2!

A record 30 Sacramento area museums will offer free or half-priced admission all day on Saturday, February 2, 2013, during the 15th Annual Sacramento Museum Day.  Twenty-eight of the 30 museums will offer free admission whereas two destinations located in residential areas – the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town – will offer half-priced admission to offset parking control and security costs.  With assistance provided by the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, this hugely popular community event is presented by the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) and proudly supported by Umpqua Bank and Chipotle Mexican Grill.  Sacramento Museum Day event hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with the last guests admitted at 4 p.m.).
