Free International Heritage Festival offers "world of entertainment" on October 6

(Modesto, CA) – Families can enjoy free international entertainment as they take a trip around the world at the 21st Annual International Heritage Festival.  The event takes place on October 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gallo Center for the Arts in downtown Modesto. The free event showcases a tapestry of cultures that compose the local area and the American heritage they share. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and a patriotic Americana Opening begins promptly at 11 a.m., with a parade of flags and a special appearance by the YES! Company Ambassadors. 

Free performances will be ongoing with most groups performing twice – inside the Gallo Center’s Rogers Theater and on the outdoor stage. No tickets are needed, but seating in the Gallo Center is offered on a first-come first-serve basis. The entertainment line-up for the two stages is:

Week-long travel advisory issued for SR 219 in Modesto

MODESTO, CA - Caltrans issued a travel advisory for Modesto area drivers this week.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform one-way traffic control on State Route 219/ Kiernan Avenue from American Avenue to Stanislaus Union School to work on utilities.

According to Caltrans, daily work is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Work will begin Monday, September 24, 2012, and is scheduled to be completed Friday, September 28, 2012.  

Motorists should expect traffic delays of approximately 15 minutes.

First Ever Latino Emergency Leadership Summit to Take Place

Stanislaus County, CA – The Latino Emergency Council (LEC) will be holding the first-ever Latino Emergency Leadership Summit 2012, bringing together more than 75 community organizations that interface with the Latino community. This is the first summit of its kind in California and possibly in the nation.

The summit is designed to highlight the importance of emergency preparedness and response in the Latino community. The focus will be on how organizations can work together to impact the hard-to-reach Latino community in Stanislaus County.  Attendance is by advanced registration only for organizations that work with the Latino community.  Organizations can register by emailing to: lecregistration@yahoo.com

Multicultural Peace Bracelets for Families begins at 11 a.m. and is another great family friendly event! Dr. Iris Haapanen, author and California State University Stanislaus Associate Professor, will teach and inspire audiences as they explore the meaning of peace through the making of multicultural bracelets. The bracelets will inspire children and adults to spread the message of peace for improving academic, social, and cultural life through their daily activities in the community and the world. The workshop will address peer pressure, lack of self-confidence, and bullying through bracelet making.

Read! Build! Play! Contest

LEGO® DUPLO® and the Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC) are holding a contest to support local libraries! The most nominated library in their "Read! Build! Play!" project will receive $5,000 for books and supplies. The top 200 libraries receive a special LEGO DUPLO Read! Build! Play! early literacy programming toolkit that combines preschool books with a collection of DUPLO bricks.
