Bus hits, kills child in front of Modesto school | News
SACRAMENTO - A child was struck and killed by a bus in front of a Modesto elementary school Wednesday afternoon.
The child was a 5-year-old kindergartner at Tuolumne Elementary School, 707 Herndon Road. He was identified Thursday as Alan Alexander Navarro Fernandez by the Stanislaus County coroner.
CHP Officer Eric Parsons believes the little boy saw his parents across the street and ran between two vehicles into the path of a Modesto city bus traveling southbound on Herndon.
It was just after noon and Alan had just gotten out of class.
The bus driver was not at fault, according to the CHP.
"We are heartbroken over this horrific accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Grief counselors are on site, and will continue to be on site, as long as they are needed," Modesto City Schools Supt. Pam Able said.
Able also said it's district policy for parents to meet their kids on school grounds and kindergartner teachers are required to supervise their students leaving campus.
Local police as well as the CHP responded.
