Friends remember Modesto family at candlelight vigil | News
MODESTO, CA - Dozens of friends, store neighbors and past customers came to remember a friendly family, shot to death inside their small market last week at 1320 Yosemite Boulevard.
The candlelight vigil lit up the side parking lot next to the V & V Oriental Market, where the Thammvongsa family worked and shared stories with neighboring shopkeepers.
Vanh Thammvongsa, his wife Vieng, and autistic daughter Nanci, were shot in the afternoon last Tuesday.
"Vanh was a really nice guy," close family friend of 30 years Wilson Voriasane said. "He helped people. If people came in and didn't have money for stuff, he would just give it to them and tell them to pay him some other day."
The vigil started with a prayer from Buddhist monks.
Speakers from the Laos community and Modesto Police Department addressed the mourners with condolences and calls to end violence in Modesto.
